1/6 plate tintype of African American woman. Fairly well dressed. This image came out of the personal effects of 1LT William Hedge of Company C 44th Mass. Hedge, a student of Harvard, enlisted on August 29, 1862 as a sergeant in Company C. He was promoted 1LT January 15, 1863. The 44th mustered out June 1863 after serving its entire time in North Carolina. Hedge went back to school and graduated in the class of 1865. Recently, his military effects were auctioned off individually, this image was in his mess chest. My guess is that this lady was the house servant of Hedge and his officer's mess while the regiment was stationed in New Berne, NC. I say this because of how well she is dressed, she appears to be to too well off for a slave. Her ethnicity might be mixed with Creole. Image is a bit dark, scans are representative of condition. Housed in a half case. This is a cool personal piece and good content as well.                                                     $395.00

McClelland's Bayonet Tactics manual. Good condition will all illustrations present. Some binding damage where cover meets binding--see pics.
