Identified U.S Colored Heavy Artillery Cap Box. This is an outstanding piece of Civil War and African American history. You can still find identified cap boxes, but I have never seen one with a period identification to an African American member of the United States Colored Heavy Artillery. This box is minus the pick and wool and does not exhibit a maker’s mark, but it does have a great Civil War stenciled identification on the back of the outer flap. The stencil reads “ H. Clay Co A 3rd USCAH” This identifies the box to PVT Henry Clay Co A. 3rd U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery. Clay enlisted from Memphis, TN, in 1863 and was discharged in 1865. He died in 1911 and is buried in Memphis National Cemetery. Records indicate (although I have not sent to the Achieves for full records) that he also had service in Company B. The 3rd USCHA was comprised mostly of recruits from Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama and performed garrison duty in the Knoxville region. None the less, this is a real opportunity to have a USCT piece in your collection. Box is in sound condition. The stencil maker seemed to reverse the USCHA with “USCAH” but the stencil is dead-on Civil War period. This box surfaced at auction from a Pittsburg area estate, the Soldier’s waist belt/plate and bayonet scabbard was also auctioned off, but someone else got those. GREAT historic cap box. $345.00
